Ok this is now a joke!
I have kept an eye on this forum and there has been no releases
for the fsg-3 in 15 months this is a long time!
We should not have to change the mini pci wifi card to have a
stable connection  and the php/mysql should be updated on the fsg
again users should not have to look at doing this manually.....

I asked Freecom UK direct about this...

Problem Description:
Just wondering if there is a planned release of updated firmware for the
FSG-3? It looks like the last "stable" release was 3.2.3 in 2006,
everything since then has been tagged as beta. And even the latest beta is
more than a year old now.

and got this in reply:
Freecom Support wrote:

Sorry no info on any new firmware for the FSG.

Not terribly supportive! If they would just tell us "there will never be another update", at least then we know where we stand. "No info" doesn't help. I'll push a bit harder and see what happens.

I recall from an earlier email conversation with them, that all the FSG support has moved to the facility in Germany. Perhaps one of our Germam-speaking members could ask the question of them?

So then I asked...

Does that mean that there will be no new firmware? Or that the UK office doesn't have a release schedule?

and they replied...

So I guess at this point we consider it to be an abandoned project. At least now we know! But I'm not quite ready to give up on my FSG yet, so the question is what to do?
  • Carry on as normal. Hey, it works just fine for me at the moment.
  • As a community, pick up the project and run with it. It is, after all, open source.
  • Seek an alternative already being actively maintained, something like OpenWRT, for instance?
All academic for me personally at the moment as I don't even have the time to spend on my current hobby-projects. But interesting to think about.

why we don't build our own firmware version with new version
of apache, samba, and mysql?

today, i get a new bug with 4.4.5. e few minutes after enable
wireless lan on fsg, the fsg stop working and don't do anything
whatever i do. by the way all settings are lost.
after rebuild all settings and enable wireless lan the same
happened.
so i reinstall 4.4.5 but don't help. at result i have to downgrade.

Thanks for asking kenpem !
This is not good im not good enought to build a new version plus there is debate and always
has been on how open the source is !
The cgi scripts for the admin are compiled in the source release not good
so would either need the raw code from freecom or some clever person to reverse engineer
them.

the source also from gci is opensource and available since 4.3.8
but 4.4.5 is still unpublished. but freecom have to do so.

i try to rebuild a new version with some software-changes in august.
until there i will write a howto in our wiki, which describes how to
do so with linux, windows and mac.

Hi jo-master

You mean a new firmware version ? It is possible to insert the optware kernel.
This kernel support nfs and much more . I run this kernel with nfsd on my fsg and it works fine.

If you need someone for testing , you can contact me. My FSG has a serial port and i have some linux experience . I have small experience with compiling for the optwarefeed. I try to compile the firmware on my pc , but no luck , i need a howto :-(

 ok,
seems that you are the really right man for this. until now i only have
less experiences with building and using my own kernels. i also
use optware and created some packages for me (next version of
FSGFreeWI will be available via ipkg).

today i will ask again for source of 4.4.5 and than first step should be
to compile this version:
- compile 4.4.5 and get it to run on fsg
- create a public system to develop our own firmware, based on subversion and
current compile-system of firmware 4.4.5
- include new versions of basic components (like apache, samba, vsftpd, ssh)
- start to rebuild firmware (specially the configuration system created by freecom
should be replace by a much more dynamical one, which works together with
optware)

i don't have a serial port. is there a howto?

but before starting such a project we really should think about other possibilities,
like openwrt or debian on fsg. perhaps it is less work to get a much better fsg based
on this systems and only build an easy methode to upgrade from freecom firmware
to these owns.

so lets discuss...

as media servers I can recommend

MediaTomb, a PS3 compliant DLNA server

zina a webbased music server (like FileNice)

both open source
ushare is also possible but only allows 1 stream per instance

as Office stuff:

see opengoo

mail: roundcube

other:
PhpMyBackupPro
PhpMyAdmin (of course)
PhpSysInfo
PhpMyIPKG

WishList:
CronJob Editor
WebEditor for editing config Files
Moblock
IP Cam support

I played with this for a while (and even wrote the Wiki how-to for it), but have to say that after extended use, it was just too sluggish. There must be a decent, responsive webmail client out there somewhere. SquirrelMail was quick enough, but ugly and feature-poor. To be continued!

Why? IP Cams don't need support, they do it themselves. USB webcam support, on the other hand... ! ***edit*** unless, of course, you mean plugging a simple webcam into the FSG, and them making that appear to be an IP cam to the rest of the network/world? In which case - damn fine idea!

IP Cam: they need software and did you read the wiki page? it's about what you want for your device to become...I don't see any firmware support as in the synology diskstation and even that has only 1 licence for one camera

mail, well I have a DTG and maybe that is a little faster than the FSG

nobody seems to think, that we should change to a better opensource-firmware
like openwrt, isn't it?
to my mind it could much easier to use such a working system, than to
develop a own system. to port and to make it easy to install would be
also a lot of work. (if somebody has too much time  )

but programmers don't publish them until now
