I'd surmised that the RedBoot name came from the fact that the code-base is shared with (poached from?) the LinkSys NSLU2 "Slug", where RedBoot is a recovery process (albeit an entirely different one), so named because you have to reboot the device while holding in the reset switch, which must be released when the power LED turns red. But I must point out this is only supposition - if anybody can verify, that would be good.
